misty morning

I headed down to Toronto’s Waterfront area for a quick jog the other day and snapped this picture. I love how the climate changes so much just by being near the lake, the rest of the city was sunny but near the lake  it looked like a coastal fishing village. The sun started the to break through not long after I took this so its a nice moment capture in time.

I am working on making some more product, I printed pillows all day yesterday to have more ready to sell at Distil- the first batch sold so they requested more. And I have another place interested in selling them and a few other things as well so its back to the studio for me.

down time

In the past year I have become really bad at taking time off. So since its been a little slow around here and there aren’t too many things going on right now, I’ve been taking a little down time. There are still things in the works, new products and maybe more shows but I’ll be trying to take it easy for most of May. Its a nice change of pace and I still have work and an internship to fill up my days. They just won’t be as full as they could be and its a nice change of pace and I think a good refresh for me and my creativity. Wishing you some nice long and relaxing days of may and maybe even a few cat naps…

I am so excited to share my new pillows! They each have coins on them and are printed in black on cotton. The larger loonie and toonie ones have a grey print underneath to create some depth. And they all have a linen cotton back with a small loonie button at the closure.

I also spent some time working on some new snazzy labels for them, here’s a quick look at those:

And the best news about these is that they are now for sale at Distill Gallery here in Toronto! I am working on more loonie/toonie stuff so hopefully I will have more to share in the next few weeks.  And I will be adding them to my Etsy shop soon.

Its been a little while since my last post, but much work was to be done. My last day of school is tomorrow and I can’t wait for school to be out for summer!

Here’s a quick look at one of my new products and yes its more coin related work. Next week when I have a bit more time, I’ll give you the details on some very exciting news on where these pillows are being sold. In the meantime, enjoy the spring weather!

Canadian Coinage

I don’t know if its because I am not from Canada but I find symbols of Canadian identity very interesting. So I’ve been working a quite a few loonies and twonies into projects for school. There’s something about these iconic and everyday symbols that I love.

So above is a project I did for drawing class of a twonie, loonie and quarter each printed with the image in the background. I then did free-motion embroidery over top the image on black thread. And then to add a touch of whimsy as well as play into the Canada is cold stereotype I stitched a scarf in bright red onto each animal in the set. I sized the print to fit into the embroidery hoops on the outside and I just love how the hoop so nicely frames up the pieces and looks a little bit old fashioned as well. Its a nice combination and I think works well here.

If you are interested  Canadian artist Lucky Jackson does some really great embroidery hoop work, I really like the celebrity ones and the mug shots.

As for me, more loonie work to do!

happy early spring

And a quick look at a snowdrop from my garden:

This nice weather means I don’t want to do any work.  But I still have some deadlines to meet so that doesn’t really match up. Hopefully I can sneak in some quality sun time. Happy spring to you all!

This is one of my favorite school projects that I’ve done so far. It was also the hardest and worst project idea I’ve ever had. The wire frame kept curling up and I can’t go near this thing without cutting myself on the edges. And it took forever. But I love it!

Its cross stitch of my grandmother. Its based off a photo one of her very good friends took of her about 15 years ago. I enlarged the photo and broke it into small square to create a pixelated look. I used a cross stitch style on the wire frame because one of my very first memories of doing crafts was with her and making this funny little Christmas ornaments with plastic shapes and yarn.  So I thought I would adapt that make it bigger and more dramatic.

Now the piece hangs in my living room. It was very well received by my teachers and I have actually entered it into a textile exhibition so hopefully a few more people will get to enjoy it. In the meantime I will debate it but I think all the work is starting to have been worthwhile.
